Filter Sand

There are several types of sand filters, each designed for specific filtration needs. Here are some of the common types for which Absorb provides media.

  1. Slow Sand Filter: Water passes through a bed of sand at a slow rate. The filtration process relies on both physical straining and biological activity. (Farm Filters).

  2. Rapid Sand Filter: Water flows rapidly through a bed of sand, typically combined with a coagulant to aid in particle removal. (Large-scale water treatment plants).

  3. Pressure Sand Filter: Water is forced through a sand bed under pressure. (Application include Industrial, Aquariums, Pools, Oil & Gas, Wastewater).

  4. Dual Media Filter: Combines sand with another media, such as anthracite coal, to improve filtration efficiency. This is used when a higher level of filtration is required.

  5. Multi-Layer Sand Filter: Uses layers of different-sized media, including sand, gravel, and sometimes other materials, to optimise filtration by capturing a range of particle sizes.

Each type of filter has its advantages depending on the specific application and desired water quality.

  • QFS1 Coarse Filter Sand
    QFS1 Coarse Sand (1.13-2.46 mm, 99.1% Silicon)

QFS1, with its high silica content exceeding 99%, is essential for specialised applications such as water filtration. It serves as a support layer in multi-layer filtration systems or as a coarse medium in primary filtration systems.

What is Mesh Size?

Mesh size refers to the number of openings per linear inch in a sieve or screen. The size of the openings determines the granularity of the material that can pass through it. Early sieves were handcrafted, and their consistency depended on local craftsmanship rather than standardized measurements. With the need for a reliable and consistent way to classify particle sizes a standardised system for mesh sizes was introduced in the early 1900s.While the concept of mesh sizing has expanded beyond sieves to digital particle analysis in the 21st century, mesh sizing remains a fundamental part of material science and industrial processes.

At Absorb, we classify our filtration sand using a unique code system rather than traditional mesh sizes. This approach allows us to better meet the specific needs of our customers, as the specifications we are asked to supply often fall outside standard mesh size ranges. Our code system ensures precise identification and consistency for each product. When required, we also provide an independent particle size analysis, offering a detailed breakdown of particle distribution to ensure compliance with your exact specifications. This flexibility and commitment to quality enable us to deliver the right filtration sand for even the most demanding applications.
